Is Cosmetology the Career for You?

BY I Don't Love My Job / January 21, 2019

Many people often find their career path by simply following what interests them. If you love hair and makeup and making yourself and others beautiful, then cosmetology could be the career path for you.

How Do You Become a Cosmetologist?

In most cases those who become cosmetologists, already have a love for hair and makeup. Even if you are not very good at it yet, you can learn the tricks of the trade through a good training program. To begin with, you just need to enjoy trying new hairstyles, doing other people's hair or enjoy applying makeup and doing nails. Once you have decided this is the path for you, you would enter a cosmetology training program. These programs are far more easy to get enrolled in than traditional college and are also often less expensive. In cosmetology school you will learn how to professionally cut and style hair, do nails and, if you wish, learn about make up artistry.

Do I Need Certification?

In most places, yes, you will need to be certified. Certification does often require a money investment on your part for the test and/or certification. Consider this an investment you are making into your future career.

Finding Work

Once you are certified, finding work in beauty salons or barber shops is fairly easy. Even if you just start out answering the phone and taking appointments, get your foot in the door. You will soon have the potential to move up in the industry by providing great service to your clients.

If you are considering a career in cosmetology, remember this is a great profession, which requires minimal educational investment, but great earning potential and a very fulfilling job path.
